How do you confess your love and your willingness to share your life as husband and wife in the perfect way?

I don’t think there is an answer to this that would fit everyone - possibly the reason why proposing to your beloved can be quite nerve-wrecking to many. Some people just wake up one morning, look at their partner and the question just pops out by itself while others go through great lengths of planning and preparing for the ‘big moment’.

When I got contacted by Madri & Niki from The Event Planners (one of SA’s top event and wedding planning companies) to sing at a planned marriage proposal, I was quite amazed by the amount of love and care that was put into the preparation. I have sung at engagement proposals before but this one was going to be the most extravagant to date.

The Malta-based couple had flown into Cape Town just a few days before the big day. Cape Town Helicopters picked up Jonathan and Amy at the V&A Waterfront only accompanied by the pilot and top SA photographer Carla Hildebrandt of BlueCheri Photography (to document the special events of the day with the unexpecting fiancee-to-be and Jonathan).

And… What better day to do this than the 31st of December (2015) - a day symbolizing the celebration and ‘letting-go’ of yesterday as well as embracing the unknown tomorrow, or in this case: taking a relationship to a new beginning!

So, the helicopter took the couple on a magical flight over the Cape Peninsula - eventually landing at the exquisite & exclusive 'Lothian House' situated on the banks of the Palmiet River and a private lake at the beautiful Lothian Vineyards in the Elgin Valley (Grabouw).

Jonathan specifically wanted to hear one particular song during his proposal - a beautiful swing/jazz standard called “You Make Me Feel So Young” (by Josef Myrow & Mack Gordon. It was introduced in the 1946 musical film Three Little Girls in Blue). I had previously recorded the song with my band for an album a few years ago. The song (also released by Sinatra in 1956) didn’t end up on my album, however, I still had my recording of it. We sent it to Jonathan who was immediately convinced that I should sing it on the day.

The couple landed just after 12noon and was welcomed by the Top Wedding Singer Ike Moriz band playing swinging love songs and standards like Nat Cole’s L.O.V.E. & Ike’s very own “LOVE SWINGS”.

Upon arival Amy and Jonathan were greeted by venue manager Grant Butterworth with an ice-cold glass of Champagne for a tour of the stunning mansion. The air-conditioned rooms and drinks must have been a great relief from the 35 degree heat of a cloudless Cape summer’s day.

The happy couple then proceeded past the outside deck and massive pool to a slightly lower terrace situated right on the banks of the Palmiet River with stunning views of the valley where a private chef served them the starters of a magnificent lunch.

The magical moment was coming closer…

At proposals clients usually book Ike Moriz as a solo act or a duo, but Jonathan wanted only the best for this special day and booked the full band consisting among others of South Africa's saxophone and clarinet legend Willie Van Zyl (Navy Big Band leader), Cape Town’s well-known pianist, songwriter and singer Amanda Tiffin and top session drummer Kevin Gibson. The band played stunning swing & jazz classics as well as Moriz originals from his vast CD catalogue during starters and main course.

Just after, venue manager Grant gave us the sign that it was time to play the proposal song “You Make Me Feel So Young”. It was very touching to see Jonathan go on his knee in true gentleman-fashion (also wearing a stylish suit and tie despite the incredible summer heat) and most importantly to see the surprised and excited reaction of Amy when she said YES (!) and the young couple embraced.

We continued to play and congratulated the husband and wife to be. Nothing like seeing 2 people over the moon with love and excitement. I congratulated the couple and Amy told us how perfect everything was and how much she loves the music played. Jonathan had just chosen the perfect song and musical style for his beloved fiancée. We ended with “What A Wonderful World” on this perfect summer’s day.
